Once there lived a happy couple who had been together for decades.  But after spending years together, husband was concerned that his wife was not hearing well as she used to hear. He thought that she might need a hearing aid but he wasn’t sure how to approach her.

He called his family doctor asked for suggestion. The doctor told him to test it with a simple idea. The doctor said, “ Stand 40 feet away from her and speak as loud as you would speak to her in a normal conversation. Observe if she hears you. If not, reduce the distance into 30 feet, then 20 feet, and  so until you get a response. The distance will help us to estimate her requirements for the hearing aid ”

Next day , the husband saw his wife cooking dinner in the kitchen. So he took the opportunity to check the doctor’s Idea. He got 40 feet away from his wife and asked , “ dear what is there for dinner?” . He waited for response but did not get  any.

He moved a bit closer  and asked “ dear, what is there for dinner?”. He still did not get any response from his wife.

He then stood twenty feet away from his wife and asked the same question, hoping he would get a response this time. But the wife did not respond.

He then stood just ten feet away from his wife and asked “ Dear , What is there for dinner.”  He did not get any response

By now the husband was very concerned and felt pity about how bad is his wife’s hearing.

Then he walked right behind her and says, “ Honey, what is there for dinner. “

The wife shouted, “John, This is the the fifth time I’m saying, CHICKEN..!!”

Moral:

Most often, the problem may not be with others but could be very much within us.

One day the young Thomas Edison came home and handed a paper to his mother from his school. He told her, “My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to give it only to you.”

His mother’s eyes were tearful as she read the letter out loud to her son. “ Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself.”

After years, Edison’s mother died and he was renowned as one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day he was going through his old family things. Suddenly, he noticed a folded paper in the corner of a drawer. He took it and opened it up.

On the paper was written: “Your son is addled. We won’t let him come to school any more.”

Thomas Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century.”

joseph life part 2

The life of Joseph/ Trials to Triumph

Selected Scripture from Genesis 39-41

We are going to read Genesis chapter 39, 40, 41…just kidding.

We are going to look at the life of Joseph.

His trials and what God did with those trials to make him be the person he was.

What he needed to go through so that God could use him at the right time.

Prayer-

Introduction-

Have you ever wondered why stuff just keeps happening?

Have you ever been to a breaking point and said “I cannot take anymore”

Uttered the words “Nothing good can come out of this”

Of course you have- We have all said these phrases as were in the midst of a storm.

The life of Joseph in the Bible is one example of God making something good out of something bad. You read chapters upon chapters of things that just bombard this man and his family and you think this has got to be the plot of a movie.

From the time his brothers plotted against him (Chapter 37) to kill him because they were jealous of his daddy’s love- yelling, “here comes the dreamer.”

“Abducted and taken by force to Egypt to be a slave.”

“Pharaohs wife accusing him of seduction after almost ripping his clothes off of him.”

“Being put in prison on those false charges.”

“Spending years in a prison for something he did not do.”

Either God has a bad sense of humor or God has a plan for us even in our trials.

I would believe He has a plan- Plan A, God’s Best, well thought out plan for you and for me.

Job, Joseph, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Moses, all faced trials that appeared to them at the time as God turning His back to find out that God never left, He was there all the time.

You know what makes the Bible powerful?

Few find it not because God doesn’t want to reveal it to us, but because we refuse to look and believe it.

The Bible is powerful because it has the power to convict.

The power to equip.

The power to provide wisdom.

The power to change your life even in a bad situation.

The power of His Holy Spirit to provide comfort, peace, strength, despite what you are going through.

God goes to a lot of trouble to show us that He desires a relationship with us, not just knowing of God, but knowing God personally.

How do you imagine God?

Someone who keeps you safe?

Someone who supplies your needs?

Someone who does for you only what you ask Him to do? A Genie if you will.

Someone who gives a lot of rules and take the fun out of your life?

The bible is the written Word of God- Each example, each parable, each story is a reflection of the relationship that God wants to establish with you.

Commentary-

“We can learn Greek and Hebrew and Aramaic so we can read the Bible in its original language, we can study and practice archeology so we can recover and understand more about the civilizations with whom God dealt in the past. We can study every bit of data there is to know about God, His Church, and His Word, but if we do not know God, we have accomplished nothing.”

We must see Relationship- God desires us to know Him. Knowing that even when we go through trials and sufferings, that He has not turn His back on us.

We must see God’s Nature- We don’t turn our backs on God- we turn our backs on the counterfeit things of this world.

We must see His attributes- We serve an all powerful God. We must see a Holy God.

We can trust that His words and His love for us never changes.

We can know Him personally- Because God has chosen to reveal Himself to us.

We must see our need for God- I must rely on the merit of Christ rather than myself. I am not God, He is to be my God.

If you understand this, you will look at your situations differently. Instead of being glad that is not me as you read of these men and their trials, you would see that if God has brought these men through these trials He will bring us through them because He does not love them more than He loves me. Amen.

Hudson Taylor

Who opened up the mission work of Christ in China wrote these words;

“It is not easy to keep first things first and make time for prayer. Yet without this there cannot but be failure and unrest. The soul that is starved cannot rejoice in the Lord.”

“Taylor had learned that there is no substitute for real spiritual blessing. “I saw him and I sought him, I had him and I wanted him.”

King David “My soul thirsts for you, my soul shall be satisfied.” Are you thirsty for God?

Hudson Taylor, King David, Joseph all learned a lesson that no matter what you are going through that you will not be satisfied with anything less than God’s best for your life- even if right now you would go through hardship.

Joseph had an unbroken fellowship with God.

His circumstances kept changing but his relationship with God was constant.

He had fellowship with God when he was a favorite son in his father’s house.

God communicated with him through dreams revealing his future.

He grew up with a vision about his life and future.

Soon the circumstances changed in his life.

He became a slave in Pothiphars house and later a prisoner in jail. But his fellowship with God was unaffected.

God was with him all the time.

So what can we take away from God’s Word today? Write it down

Favor with God is more important than favor with man

Genesis chapter 39:6-

“But he refused. With me in charge, he told her, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God.”

Joseph had favor with God no matter where he was. In his father’s house, Potiphar the Kings house, the prison and with the prison guards,

He had favor because he had relationship- it was not based upon what he was going through wither he was going to be faithful to God.

He saw disobedience to God as sin and even if no one saw him, he was going to be faithful.

Illustration-

I have a pastor friend that shared a heart story. He told of his daughters disabilities, he told of his struggle in ministry, he shared that at times he seemed to be pushing a boulder always up hill. He said to his brother, who is also a minister- “God must be mad at me” “God must not trust me” the brother quickly praying for words to give his younger brother- (paused) “It is not that God doesn’t trust you, it is that He does trust you with this suffering.”

Joseph was faithful

Genesis chapter 39:4-

“Joseph found favor in his eyes and become his attendant, Potiphar put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph.”

Joseph could be trusted when no one was watching-

He never questioned if he had made the right choice to be faithful. It was constant and not based upon circumstances.

Joseph may not of known his future, but he knew who held his future.

Faith is an amazing thing- it grows the more you exercise it.

Faith is the substance of things hoped, evidence of things not seen.

The Lord sometimes blesses others just because you are there- because of your faith.

Joseph was Forgiving

If there was anyone who could have had a bad attitude and lived life with a chip on his shoulder, it would have been Joseph.

He begged his brothers not to harm him and send him to Egypt as a slave… but they didn’t listen.

He told Potiphars wife that he would not sleep with her… so she lied and said that he attempted too.

In prison, he seemed to be forgotten by God and by those that he had helped.

He chose to forgive and not let bitterness run his life. He was not going to let resentment eat away at his heart but chose to keep his eyes on a God that could be trusted.

Hatred, Envy, Temptation, prison, lying, gossip… the stuff great movies are made of- He remained faithful to God and did not give up that His God would deliver at the proper time.

Joseph had the Spirit of God

Pastor, the Spirit of God fell at Pentecost many years later than Joseph.

Pastor, the Spirit of God did not fill people yet, when God wanted to use a prophet or person, the Spirit of God fell on them so that they could accomplish the work He needed them to do.

There is a supernatural dimension to his life!

This man did not do things in his own power.

He did not think up a way to save a whole nation from starving by himself.

He did not forgive his family of killing him daily with their abuse and misconduct. He had help. Supernatural help.

It took courage and it took God’s anointing to do that!

You do not practice personal integrity like that without God’s help. We live in this world, we cannot do it without God’s help.

People look for integrity, character, ethics.

They call people heroes who are able to make hard decisions and run into burning buildings.

That was forged in knowing God and having a relationship with him- not knowing of him!

Closing,

To close we have to go to the very last chapter in Genesis.

50:15-21 Read from Bible

What if Joseph held a grudge?

“Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

You want to live a life like Joseph?

You have to love your God like Joseph loved his God.

We will never see what God is doing in a situation until we let God play it out. We will never see the accomplishments He intends until we trust Him to see it through.

It is easy to be angry, rage at wrongs, not forgive, want second chances but never give one.

We would be just like the world.

We are called to be like Christ. Different! Peculiar!

(19) “But Joseph said to them, “ Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

There are a lot of voices today telling people what they ought to do and they themselves are not doing it.

God is looking for a few to stand in the gap- to be sensitive to what God is doing and be a help not a hindrance.

What is God speaking to you this morning?

Be more Christ-like?

Be more involved?

Be more sensitive?

Maybe, He is just telling you this morning that He loves you, and it will be okay.

He is offering you His peace during a troubling moment and telling you it wont last forever.

Amen.

Joseph life

 Introduction-

We are wrapping up a mini-series today on the life of Joseph.

We have looked at some of the things he went through in his life.

Some of the things done to him were deserved and many things were beyond his control.

Yet God instructed him and instructs us to persevere and live in the fact that He (God) will never leave us nor forsake us as we live our lives for God in this world.

We looked at the persecution of believers and the fact that bad things happen to good people because we live in a sinful world and it will be that way until Christ returns and guaranteed He will return!

We looked at dreaming big! Godly dreams happen!

If God is in it, dream bigger than what you yourself can do. If you can do it without God, it is not a miracle.

Yet, while dreaming, make sure you have God blessing upon it and guiding what you are doing.

We saw Joseph integrity- He determined that before he was in hard situations that he was going to do what was pleasing to God FIRST - even if no one else saw him or weather he was going to get caught.

Integrity is a lifestyle, it is not what you say, it is what you do and how you live.

Integrity is your faith in action. Don’t tell me…show me.

Last week, we looked at purpose- His life was a mess, but his faith and his relationship with God was organized and strong.

He had learned to depend on God.

He learned to stay focused on God and not the circumstance.

Today fulfilling God’s plan-

In your life

Through your life

2 separate things- Both with God at the center

Genesis chapter 50:15-21

Questions-

What are you willing to let God do in your life?

Do you give Him permission to do what He desires and not fight Him every step of the way?

What are you willing to let God do through your life?

Do you give Him permission to use what you are going through or what you have been through to help someone else who is struggling with the same thing?

After 17 years of not knowing exactly what God had intended for him in his life, but still knowing that God was in it, He is thrust into a ministry that is bigger than anyone could imagine.

He is 2nd in charge of all Israel and in a position of fulfilling the God-given dream to feed a nation of people.

Restore a relationship with his brothers who had wronged him.

Remember when all these things began to happen to the teenage Joseph? He said to the accusers- 39:9-

“How could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God.” As Potiphars wife attempted to seduce him-He was more concerned what God thought than even what the accusers thought.

When he was imprisoned and waiting for God to release him, he was being used by God to interpret dreams- 40:8-

“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

He is brought to Pharaoh because of previous interpretations he had done and he says to Pharaoh 41:16-

“I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer.” He was not going to let the glory of God be given to him- he was pointing the ruler of Egypt back to God.

Years later, Joseph is in charge of all of Egypt for food trade and meeting the needs of people on that side of the world.

His brothers are now standing before him… they do not even yet know that it is he.

The ones who had betrayed him, the very brothers who were willing to destroy his life, tried to kill him, sold him to thieves and vagabonds who would sell him as a slave for profit, those same boys who lied to his father of how he had died.

Joseph stands before them and has a heart of compassion- choosing to take the high road which is to let God be the judge and jury and he (by choice) would have a heart tender to the things of God and not personal revenge.

Through a series of test and by divine direction, his whole family including his ailing Father stands before him as a witness of God’s goodness, God’s mercy, God’s Grace, and God’s power of forgiveness.

Here is where his journey has taken us today-

Without hearing God’s direction, you will make bad decisions.

Without depending on God, you will give up at a moment when God may be ready to turn things around.

Many have given up just before God was ready to pour out his blessing upon them.

I. What are YOU willing to let God do in your life?

First, only you can answer that question-

If you are not willing to let Him in your life, He will not force Himself in your life because you have a choice.

You have the power to answer Gods call to let Him in or reject Him and keep Him out.

To give no answer, or be unresponsive to His call is to say no to the things of God

Joseph was willing to let God rule and reign in His life. What does that look like?

No matter who you are, relationships are critical to your existence as human beings.

God created you to have relationships with others, and with him.

He desires to be connected to you through his Son Jesus.

A relationship with your creator is to be known by God himself. Those that wonder when they die if they would go to heaven or Hell do not have the right relationship with God.

Wondering if God really loves you is to not have the personal relationship with Him that God desires.

To be in a right relationship with God you can know that if you died this moment that in an instant you would be in the loving presence of Jesus Christ. You would not have a second thought of wither Jesus Christ loved you because you sense His presence in your life daily.

For God to reign, He has to be in charge. You have to have more of God than more of yourself controlling your life. (Repeat)

Illustration-(Anonymous)

As an adult I’d rather get a cavity filled than go to Chuck E. Cheese’s, but as a kid I enjoyed running around the ball pit, eating ridiculous amounts of pizza and celebrating birthdays with friends. Sure, I could have done without the singing stuffed animals, but the unlimited pizza, cake and soda made up for it. I remember walking to the soda machine to refill my cup during a friend’s party while we waited for her mom to cut the cake. A few of the girls in our group followed me, ready to give their bloodstream another shot of sugar.

Let’s make suicide sodas said one girl! What is that? You know, when you fill your cup with a little of each of the drinks in the machine. The idea of suicide soda intrigued me, so I decided to give it try. From my first sip I knew suicide soda was going to be the drink of choice for the rest of our elementary school parties. After all, why have one soda when you can have them all? Excess is best, right?

For much of my life, I filled my cup with as much as it could possibly hold. Like the little girl standing in line at Chuck E. Cheese’s, I craved control over the things that made up my life’s unique flavor. I held my cup tightly to make sure that whatever I wanted got in and whatever I didn’t want stayed out. And I said yes to whatever came my way because if I said yes, that meant more control over something.

But things have a way of catching up to us, and after trying to add and control so many things, my cup became so full that it slipped right out of my hands. Suddenly I lost control. All I could do was watch as the soda spilled all over me, drenching me in an unrecognizable, foul tang. Everything was out of my hands. (End quote)

Personal illustration-

Coming home from the church and Becky was on the front porch and PD our Westie was inside looking out at the screen at me and I said to Becky, you know PD would have more freedom if he would only listen better. Then immediately I thought and said, I bet that is what God thinks sometimes in our lives.

We would have more freedom if we only obeyed what the Lord has instructed us to do.

Freedom that is abused is just as harmful as freedom taken away.

For God to reign in our lives we need to stop filling ourselves with everything of our own choosing and begin allowing God to fill us with the things of God. You cannot be filled with God and filled with self. You have to allow God to empty self and fill that void with the things of God.

Joseph allowed God to do that in his life-

When he was going through a hard time, he knew God had his back.

When decisions needed to be made, He first sought God for the answers.

When he did not hear from God, he relied on what he already knew of God so that he was able to move forward even when the times were dark.

Are you willing to do that his morning? It is not that God does not want to do that in our lives, but that He gets so much resistance from us.

Daniel 6:26/ The King had a change of heart from self to God when he said these words-

"I make a decree that in all the dominion of my kingdom men are to fear and tremble before the God of Daniel; For He is the living God and enduring forever, And His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed, And His dominion will be forever.”

II. What are you willing to let God do through your life?

We won’t spend much time with this because if you do not allow God in your life, He will not be allowed to work through your life.

Each one of us has a journey and if God is going to get any glory and honor from our lives, it will be in the things that He has helped us through and how we use those situations to help others through and prayerfully avoid in their life.

Some call them intersections- those places that people paths cross and we even for a short time intersect with them- if we are open to let God work through you, it is those times that we will see God divinely bring people in our lives. Rosedale over the years has seen people healed of different things and move on to other places. It is a ministry, but it not our only ministry. God is calling people here to help people get to where they need to be by being transparent and allowing God to use them.

The message today is not by accident, you are not here by coincidence- God has something for us and are we willing to let God do what He desires to do in our lives?

You cannot hide a grateful heart-

You cannot hide the joy of the Lord and a forgiven lifestyle-

It will relate back to helping someone else that is struggling-

You will be sensitive to seeing through spiritual eyes the warning signs in others lives and desire with urgency to help them avoid meltdowns and get along side of them.

You will make time for the things that you feel are important.

Amen. Prayer.
